Formula Information
Uptime/Downtime Method
Availability = (Uptime / Total Time) × 100%
Where Total Time = Uptime + Downtime
MTBF/MTTR Method
Availability = (MTBF / (MTBF + MTTR)) × 100%

What is system availability?
System availability is a reliability metric that measures the percentage of time a system is operational and accessible when required for use. It is expressed as a percentage from 0% to 100%.
Availability combines both reliability (how often failures occur) and maintainability (how quickly systems are restored), which is why it is the usual basis for uptime targets and service level agreements.
Availability formulas
Availability = Uptime ÷ Total time × 100%Availability = MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR) × 100%Availability calculation examples
Example 1 — web server uptime. One month (720 hours) with 4 hours of planned maintenance and 2 hours of unplanned downtime:
720 − (4 + 2) = 714 hours714 ÷ 720 × 100% = 99.17%Example 2 — from MTBF and MTTR. A manufacturing system with an MTBF of 500 hours and an MTTR of 5 hours:
500 ÷ (500 + 5) × 100% = 99.01%The nines: availability vs. downtime
| Availability | Name | Downtime per year |
|---|---|---|
| 99% | Two nines | 3.65 days |
| 99.9% | Three nines | 8.76 hours |
| 99.99% | Four nines | 52.6 minutes |
| 99.999% | Five nines | 5.26 minutes |
Commonly quoted targets: cloud and data-centre services 99.9–99.99%, carrier telecom networks 99.999%, continuous process plants 95–98%, assembly lines 90–95%. Treat these as orientation; the right target is the one that balances the cost of downtime against the cost of achieving it.

How to improve system availability
| Lever | Typical actions |
|---|---|
| Increase MTBF (reliability) | Preventive and predictive maintenance, higher-quality components, better operating procedures, environmental control, redundancy for critical systems |
| Decrease MTTR (maintainability) | Spare parts on hand, technician training, better diagnostics, optimised procedures, accessible design, remote monitoring |
